7. The Art of Reiki

The Art of Reiki

Reiki symbols are basically Sanskrit that originate from Japanese Kanji and are fundamentally words from the Japanese language help expand the flow of Life Force Energy. Traditionally, these symbols have been kept secret and only revealed to students who have reached the second degree and received the corresponding attunement. These symbols are an essential part of Reiki and revealed during a Level 2 Attunement. Although these symbols do not have any special power in and of themselves, using them after attunement helps a practitioner focus the Reiki energies.

Quote: "Just for today, I will not worry. Just for today, I will not be angry. Just for today, I will be grateful." - Reiki Principles

Meaning of Cho Ku Rei or the Reiki Power Symbol

Cho Ku Rei can translate as: “Placing all the power of the Universe here, now.”

Cho Ku Rei, which is considered one of the first symbols used in Usui Reiki means “Placing all the powers of the universe here”. The Reiki power symbol works as a “switch” that helps to instantly increase Reiki practitioner’s ability to channel the energies. The primary purpose of using it is to enhance the power of Reiki and draw the energy around and concentrate it on the required purpose. The power symbol looks like a coil. Cho Ku Rei is an all purpose symbol that can be used anywhere and everywhere for anything.

The symbol can be drawn in both counter and spiral clockwise directions. Some Reiki masters draw it counterclockwise when applied in areas or places where there is excess energy – but others believe that the Reiki energy always works for the highest good and there is no need for us to try to influence it by telling it what to do.

How to Use the Reiki Power Symbol

The Reiki power symbol is used primarily to connect with Reiki energy at the start of a session and also to help boost the Reiki power whenever it is required during a session. Some practitioners use it on their own palms and chakras before treating others, to help clear the channels and empower their hands. Using the power symbol over the client’s crown chakra helps create positive energy around them, while using it on the lower back and behind the heart chakra helps seal the energy at the end of the treatment. Here are a few ways that it can be used.

Example Uses of the Reiki Power Symbol

Empower other Reiki Symbols

Using the Reiki power symbol before other Reiki symbols has an empowering effect on those symbols and boosts their effectiveness.

Helps in Spot Treatment

Drawing Cho Ku Rei on a specific part of the body helps in focusing the Reiki energies on that spot, helping cure or heal both acute injuries and chronic conditions that have localized effects in the body.

Clears Negative Energies

Using this symbol mentally is useful in clearing all the stagnated energies during a Reiki session. You can also draw it on the walls of a room to clear the negative energy, and drawing it in the atmosphere around a physical space aids in cleansing the area. Drawing can be physical, such as with paint or a pen, or symbolic with the hand in the air.

Provide Protection

Drawing a large Power Symbol in front of a person or on each of their chakras works as a shield and protects the person from negative energies. Reiki works on different levels (physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually) and Cho Ku Rei will naturally provide protection on all levels.

Makes Meals Healthier and More Nutritious

Using this symbol over your meals before you start eating helps remove the negative energies present in the food, thereby making it more healthy for you.

Increase Effectiveness and Reduce Side Effects of Medication

Drawing the Reiki power symbol on your medication helps their effectiveness and can aide in reducing the side effects of the drugs.

Improve Relationships

Empowering greetings, gifts and business cards with Cho Ku Rei will enhance both personal and professional relationships, bringing about the highest good for all the involved parties.

Prevent Misfortunes

The Reiki power symbol helps in connecting to the universal energy instantly, and using it can help prevent misfortunes or a bad events. Misfortunes essentially happen because of the inharmonious energies around; using Cho Ku Rei helps purify the energy system, making accidents or bad events less likely to occur.

Activating the Law of Attraction

Cho Ku Rei proves to be an amazing law of attraction focusing tool. Empower your affirmations with it, and to make it even more effective, end all your affirmations with: “for the highest good of all.” Doing so will help ensure that you don’t get attached to a particular outcome and remain open to new, creative solutions and experiences.

Meaning of Sei Hei Ki

SEI – means birth, new life.

HEI KI – means balance, equilibrium.

Sei Hei Ki is used for emotional and mental healing, it enhances the connection between our left and right brain, our subconscious to our conscious. The symbol consists of two parts making the whole: the left side with the angles and curve, the right side with its flowing curves. Bringing two sides together, graphically conveying unification and balance. The words and image unite in meaning.

The symbol of Sei He Ki is described in several ways; where the earth and sky meet, or the waves crashing against the shore and as two sides of the brain coming together. The connection between two elements is visible, depicting the mind and the body, the sub-conscious and conscious and the two brain hemispheres, logical and creative.

When to use Sei He Ki:

Level 2 teaches us all to use this symbol for addictions, anxiety, to release strong and blocking emotions or patterns, to strengthen affirmations, confidence, and healing ability and to enhance memory. Using Sei Hei Ki helps the client find their way to healing, at their own pace, especially with long-standing issues and patterns. When the client can notice their own body and mind, they will be able to rise to what needs to be expressed, released and healed. Sei Hei Ki may allow them to create balance, peace and harmony, cleanse the body and mind to reconnect to their own innate healing ability.

How to use the Sei Heiki Symbol

There are many ways to access Sei He ki, it can be visual, audible, and/or kinesthetic (touch) methods. Knowing which ways work for you as a practitioner is essential. Understanding how you respond to these methods will help give you confidence and flow when using and applying the symbols. Try them all to see which you feel has the best fit.

You can speak aloud or in your head, image, or draw the symbol on your hands, your client, or wherever you feel the symbol is appropriate. You will gain a connection and relationship to the symbol over time. Using intention for the symbol is key. Remember to ask Reiki “to go where it needs to go, for balance and healing, for the good of the higher self.”

Sei Hei Ki can be used individually or in conjunction with the other reiki symbols, allowing you layer the different frequencies and abilities for the session. For example, first use Cho-Ku-Rei (remember to intone the words Cho-Ku-Rei three times). You then draw the Sei Hei Ki on top or beside and intone the words Sei Hei Ki three times. Finally, sandwich the other side with another Cho-Ku-Rei. This you will recognize this as the Reiki sandwich. Keep a box of tissues handy, using the sandwich may release emotions in the client that they were not expecting from the session.

The Reiki Sandwich can be used to access your own intuition and instinct when you have a question or problem to resolve in your life. Sometimes we are so focused on helping others that we forget to also access our healing ability for ourselves. Use it to calm and soothe your own mind before and after each session. Often our clients serve as a mirror to what it is we need to resolve within ourselves. By using Sei Hei ki to release our expectations, our own blockages and turmoils, we can be more of a support for who is about to walk through our door.

Some uses:

  • Thesymbol can be used to help heal misuse of drugs, alcohol, smoking etc.
  • Sei He Ki can be used to lose weight.
  • Thesymbol can be used to find things that you have misplaced. (Draw the symbolinfront of you and ask for help in findingxxxx. Let go of trying to find the object. Theanswer will soon pop up.)
  • Sei He Ki can be used to improve your memory when reading and studying. (Draw the symbol on each page as you read it with the intent of remembering the important parts.)
  • Add the symbol when doing healing (normal or distance) as this can help the healing process. Many physical problems have mental/emotional roots.

Further information

The Mental/Emotional symbol, Sei He Ki, has to do with Yin and Yang and the balance between the two sides of the brain. The left part of the symbolrepresents Yang and our left side of the brain (logic, structure and linear thinking etc.) The right side of the symbolrepresents Yin and our right side of the brain. (fantasy, feelings, intuition etc.) When you are facing another person and draw the symbolthe left side of the symbol, i.e. the Yang part of the symbol ends up on the receiver's right side of the brain and the Yin part on the left side thereby helping to balance the two sides.

  Meaning of Raku

Translated as: “Fire serpent." or “Lighting Bolt

Looks Like: A jagged lightning bolt.

Where Does the Raku Reiki Symbol Come From

While we cannot know for sure, it seems that the Raku Reiki symbol finds its origins in Tibet. The descendants of the sunken continent of Atlantissupposedly brought it into the physical plane.

Alongside the Dumo Reiki symbol, they are considered sacred, powerful spiritual tokens that are part of the esoteric teachings of Tibet.

When to Use:During the final stage of the Reiki attunement process.

Grounding and Completion Symbol

Raku is not a traditional Reiki symbol, but rather has been created by some Reiki practitioners as a part of their personal practice. Its meaning and use can therefore vary somewhat. Some practitioners use Raku as a grounding symbol, relying on it to connect with the earth's energy and promote a sense of stability and balance. It often has the dual purpose of allowing the body of the patient to receive the benefits of Reiki energy and clearing the practitioner of any negative energy that they’ve absorbed during a treatment session (or to shield themselves from negative energy or psychic attacks).

The Raku symbol can also be used as a symbol of completion or release, helping an individual to let go of old patterns, habits, or emotions that no longer serve them. By visualizing the symbol and intending for it to help release old patterns or energies, the practitioner can promote inner peace and emotional balance. Raku is usually drawn from head to ground and can also be used in isolation amid the hustle and bustle of daily life to bestow a moment of grounding.

Raku is used at the Master level of Reiki as the Grounding Symbol or Completion Symbol. It helps the receiver’s energy to flow in the full sequence from their Crown (white aura and purple aura chakras) to their Root (red aura chakra) as a means of stabilizing and grounding them.

The Raku symbol also helps bring completion to the Reiki session by drawing a line to separate the giver’s energy from the receiver’s energy. It’s a good idea to have a set of rituals after a session to bring closure and space. Washing hands is another I always do, as a ritual cleanse — both literally and energetically.

In addition to using the Raku Reiki symbol in formal Reiki sessions, it is also possible to use it in everyday life, helping to draw a boundary between yourself, and things you wish to complete or move on from. The symbol can be drawn with the eyes, or with a finger in the air, on the body, or on a surface.

It feels good to make the lines: Zig, zag, zig, zag, ZIG! Do note that the flourishes at either end of the lightning bold are stylistic and are not required for the symbol to work.

The Most Common Uses of The Raku Reiki Symbol

You may use this symbol in the attunement process as well as the self-treatment and treatment of others.

Within Attunements

You generally introduce the Raku Reiki symbol at the end of an attunement.

Specifically, the master/teacher places a prominent Raku symbol on the back of the student right after they have finished the attunement. The way to do this is to start from the head area and continue drawing it to the base of the spine.

This action has the following roles:

  1. It allows the energy and information of the attunement to settle within the physical and energetic body of the student. This enables the future Reiki practitioner to better integrate the spiritual elements that the attunement offers;

  1. Cleanses the central energy channel Sushumna from any excess residual energies;

  1. The Raku Reiki symbol offers a harmonious grounding effect that ends the attunement process while providing the future practitioner with a sense of stability after this intense spiritual experience. This is also known as an act of completion;

  1. It creates a healthy barrier between the energy fields of the teacher and the student. This may seem a little “rough” at first glance. Still, it has a beneficial effect by removing unnecessary attachments and energy strings that can imply future unwanted energy transfer. In simpler words, the freshly attuned student needs to use what they have learned with the teacher’s guidance without constantly depending on them;

Within The Self-Treatment

Generally speaking, you can visualize the Raku Reiki symbol within or at the end of your self-treatment sessions. Activate it from the top of the head and down the spine.

This has the following roles:

  1. It helps cleanse the Sushumna energy channel, removes blockages, flushes down residual energies, and allows the universal life force energy to flow freely;

  1. You’ll enjoy a grounding effect, a “down-to-Earth” feeling, that will settle your mind and energy levels;

  1. It removes unwanted energy strings that belong to past events or toxic people. These are usually elements that you drag along and can unnoticeably drain you of vital energy. To further improve the efficiency of this intention, you can visualize Raku in front of you as it cuts the energy strings that belong to these people or events;

  1. Constantly using it within the Reiki self-treatment, the Raku Reiki symbol has the potential to help you overcome addictions. This usually happens by building a protective layer rather than healing the root cause (more on this later in the article);

  1. Activating it within your palms before the self-treatment can help cleanse the aura of residual and negative energies;

  1. Activate it on your palms alongside the rest of the Reiki symbols and place them on the kidneys, liver, or any body part that may be affected. (see all the Reiki hand positions here) Raku Reiki symbol has the potential to work in dissolving kidney stones and other affections of the organs;

Raku Reiki Symbol and Addictions

Many people struggle with various unhealthy habits that sooner or later can become addictions.

There’s nothing wrong with enjoying sugar, coffee, and even alcohol from time to time. Maybe it’s not the same with drugs, of course. What’s vital to keep in mind is to aim for balance rather than forcing yourself to stay away from things that bring you joy.

At a spiritual level – these addictions emerge from various reasons, like lacking affection or the inability to understand and harmonize with the world.

From an energetic perspective – they indicate the existence of an entity that governs that addiction. This often comes with a specific form of energy and information.

• Addictions hold an inner-self-related component. When you constantly feed them, they become part of who you are at the inner-self level. Of course, this will slowly take over your emotional side, which will further show at the physical level.

• By cleansing and raising your inner self’s vibration, you can gradually free yourself from these harmful habits. Generally speaking, the Reiki self-treatment and symbols are the ideal tools for this endeavor.

• Additionally, cutting the energy cords that keep you connected to the element of your addiction will significantly help remove it from your life.

Reiki allows you to access a powerful and non-invasive way of healing. The Raku Reiki symbol will further enhance the effect specific to this need. Still, the general use of Reiki will balance everything out.

 The “Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen” Reiki Symbol

The 3rd symbol learned in Reiki used for distance healing.

Translated as: “Without past, present or future.” “The Divinity in me contacts the Divinity in you.”

When to Use: Any time.

How It’s Used: Often used for distance healing as Han Sha Ze Sho Nen enables the practitioner to transfer the universal life force energy through time and space, promoting healing and inner peace. The Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen symbol can also be used to help heal past traumas, release the negative energy that lingers from these past experiences, and to connect with deceased loved ones. Distance healing is a powerful way to send Reiki energy to someone, even if they are sitting next to you. By adding Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen to your normal healing session, you can help make the patient feel more comfortable and open up their energetic structure to receive the most benefit from the Reiki treatment.

Furthermore, the Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen symbol can be used to help balance the energy of different parts of the body, or to allow someone to connect with different aspects of their self (such as the inner child or past lives) to achieve spiritual growth. All the practitioner has to do to activate this healing energy is to draw the symbol over the affected area or imagine it in their mind's eye. Lastly, this symbol can also serve as a key to the Akashic records: sometimes thought to be the source of all human consciousness.

Sending Reiki Distance Healing To Somebody Else

First of all, remember to have the approval of the person before sending energy! Make sure to explain why you’re sending energy and coordinate, so you both focus on the same goal.

15 minutes per day are usually enough for this method.

Whether you’re sending energy for their greater good, general well-being, or to support specific goals, use the same sequence of symbols. A photo or personal belonging will certainly help, but even having the person’s first name top of mind will enhance the connection.

Sending Distance Healing To Someone Who Passed

It’s always a good idea to assist the spirit of a departed loved one on its path to evolution by having this goal and sending energy for 10 minutes at a time. However, it’s also wise to remember that this isn’t an opportunity to communicate with them but a way to help them ascend into the light.

Sending Distance Healing To Your Spirit Guides

You can improve your communication with your Spirit Guides by sending energy to them from time to time. Their purpose is to assist you and offer advice. Many wonderful results will follow if you ask for assistance and send healing energy.

Using Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen To Create Reiki Projects

Whether you’re looking for a fresh start, growing your spiritual side, or even obtaining a material objective, creating a Reiki project will be beneficial.

Write everything at the present moment like it already happened. Remember to add “for your greater good and the ones involved” because you never know what the best outcome looks like.

 Meaning of Dai Ko Myo

  “Dai” means great or big
 “Ko” means smooth or glossy
 “Myo” means bright light
Dai Ko Myo basically means “Great Enlightenment” or “Bright Shining Light”.

The Dai Ko Myo in Usui Reiki is known as the “Master” symbol. It is one of the most powerful symbols in Reiki that can be used only by Reiki Masters. The power of the Reiki Master symbol combines the power of the first three symbols, Cho Ku Rei, Sei He Ki and Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen.

This Reiki symbol represents inner knowledge, truth and enlightenment.

The Dai Ko Myo is the symbol with the highest vibration and is therefore most transformative at the spiritual level. Using this symbol helps enhance the healing of the soul as the energies are sent to the more subtle layers of the aura and upper chakras. When the spiritual soul is healed, the mental and physical get healed automatically.

The Dai Ko Myo symbol also helps heal our karma. Also known as “all purpose healing” symbol and “empowerment” symbol, this Reiki symbol represents all that is Reiki, including personal empowerment and love. Reiki practitioners at all levels receive the master symbol from their Reiki teacher during the attunement.

What happens during Dai Ko Myo Attunement?

When a Reiki practitioner is attuned with this Reiki symbol by a Reiki master, the symbol enters into the crown chakra and enlightens the truth about who we really are. The symbol helps us recognize our divinity and association to everything, taking us back to God.

The Dai Ko Myo symbol reconnects us to the divinity that is inherit within all and helps us heal ourselves and others. Once attuned to the symbol, it is highly recommended that you use the symbol with all your Reiki works. This will allow your energy receive an extra boost and help you draw strong energy constantly through your energetic system.

Where to apply Dai Ko Myo symbol during healing?

Using the Reiki master symbol enhances the healing effects of every form of Reiki healing. The symbol is usually used with every Reiki healing whether individual or group, hands-on or distant or when aimed at an individual, thing or situation. To apply the symbol during a Reiki healing session, first draw the Reiki symbol on your own palms or hands and then visualize or redraw the symbol on the crown chakra and the palms or hands of the client and the area to be treated.

Benefits of Meditating on Dai Ko Myo symbol

The Reiki master symbol provides great benefits when meditating with it. It helps lead you to the “Bodhisattva Path” or “Saint Hood”. Accepting Dai Ko Myo through meditation encourages you to help others by helping yourself and direct your life specifically towards this purpose. Meditating on the symbol not only allows self purification and self cleansing at a spiritual level, but also helps create more harmony and balance in your daily life. It brings “light” in your life and helps eliminate blockages at all physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels, present, past and future.

Dai Ko Myo is one of the most sacred Reiki symbols. The primary purpose of using this symbol is empowerment, enlightenment, unity and wakening of the soul. It is a bright shining light which nourishes and fills, shows the way and rests the spirit. It helps nurture your physical body and soul and also encourages you to do the same for others. With practice, using Dai Ko Myo can bring profound changes in life and make you a better person.

The Most Important Sequence Of Symbols Using Cho Ku Rei

This sequence includes the emotional healing symbol Sei He Ki and the Reiki distance healing symbol Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen.

Together with Cho Ku Rei, they form one of the most important sequences in all types of Reiki.

Cho Ku Rei + Sei He Ki + Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen enables you to access the universal life force energy in almost any situation, while amplifying its flow and power.

  • Apply it above your crown chakra to enable a continuous flow of energy;
  • Activate it on the ceiling to create a cone of light that will help cleanse the room;
  • Use it to send healing at a distance for your past, present, future, or a person (with their consent);

As said before, Reiki works on intention. That’s why it doesn’t matter how you place the symbols. You can activate them in the reverse order, and they will work just fine.

 How To Use The Raku Reiki Symbols To Help Overcome Addictions

To be even more specific, consider the following sequence of Reiki symbols to help address addictions:
Cho Ku Rei + Sei He Ki + Dai Ko Myo + Raku

Sei He Ki helps cleanse the mental and emotional fields from the residual energies that may be related to the addiction in question;

Dai Ko Myo brings pure energy and raises your vibration;

Raku cleanses your energy fields while cutting the cords attached to the energy and entity attached to that addiction;

Here’s a suggestion on how to approach this method:

Activate these symbols in your palms before the self-treatment or treatment of others;

Then, activate Cho Ku Rei + Sei He Ki + Dai Ko Myo on all the chakras;

Start the treatment with the intention of removing any unwanted addictions;

Always ask for everything to happen aligned with your greater good and for the benefit of those involved;

Each element plays its part but combing all of them will lead to a more complete effect. While they might seem unrelated at times, they work together to eradicate the energy behind each addiction.

Therapy on Others

Using the Raku Reiki symbol in therapy for others is similar to using it on yourself. The difference lies in the patient’s intentions and willingness to be open to spiritual change.

After performing a cleansing, therapy and/or self-treatment, use the Raku Reiki symbol on the back of the body.

Expect the following results:

  1. It will cleanse the main energy channel Sushumna from leftover residual energies;

  1. It will offer a grounding effect, stabilizing the Kundalini energy and offering mental balance;

  1. When you use it on both the back and front of the body, with the intention of cutting the cords with unwanted past experiences or people, it will sever those strings and allow the person to regain their internal energy;

  1. Within treatment, you can place your activated palms on the areas of the main organs to help remove physical imbalances such as kidney stones or sand;

  1. As mentioned before, using the Raku Reiki symbol in treating others will help cleanse their aura of residual energies and help keep them away from addictions;
